Plosila DNA Project

The Plosila DNA Project welcomes all participants. We encourage you to join today!

Male name changes were common in Finland, since they used to take on the name of

a farm or a place when they married or moved.  It is an Endogamic society meaning

that relatives often marry distant or close relatives.  Because of that we accept men

with different surnames other than Plosila.

Participating in this project is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in

the paper records, which will help with your family history research. We will also

discover which family trees are related.  As the project progresses, the results for the

various family trees will provide information about the evolution of the surname.

The Y DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father,

his father, and back in time.  You must be male to take this test.  If you believe there is

a Plosila or matching name in your direct male line, although you have a different

surname, you are also welcome to participate.  If you are female, you will need to

find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree or take

the family finder test.

We encourage males who order a Y-DNA test to order the 37 marker test.  The 67

marker test is more precise, but it also costs more.

Both males and females can take the Family Finder test.  This is an autosomal DNA

test which is diluted at each generation and so it only goes back about 5 generations.

This is the best test for women to take, but an even better choice for women would be

to get a brother or male cousin with the surname Plosila or an allied name to take the

y-dna test.

Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female

line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time.  Both men

and women inherit mtDNA, although only women pass it on.   However, the mtDNA

test has not proven to be useful for most people because most matches have a common ancestor several hundred or thousands of years ago.  In the past we have had some

success using this test when there is a theory to test and two people are tested to

confirm or refute the theory.  Contact the administrator if you are interested in taking

this test.

The Y DNA, Family Finder and the mtDNA tests results contain no personal

information, and you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related.

This is an opportunity to learn more about your origins and ancestry.
